Buies Creek, N.C. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (6-5, 0-0 SBC) defeated the Campbell Fighting Camels (4-7, 0-0 CAA) 14-11 to take the series on a chilly Sunday afternoon (March 2
nd).
Â
It was a back-and-forth affair through the first few innings as the Eagles struck to opening the ball game with Jonah Oster blasting a two-run shot in the bottom of the opening inning to take the lead back.
Â
On Southern's next try,
Cade Parker would deliver a shot down the right line to tie up the game with
J.C. Peacher hitting a single the other way to give the Eagles back the lead. In the bottom of the second, a stolen base attempt by the Camels was gunned down by
Sean White, and confirmed after the review, Campbell head man Chris Marx was tossed for disputing, making both head coaches getting tossed on the weekend. Even with that, Campbell would still tie up the ball game on a wild throw the very next pitch.
Â
The Eagles' offense exploded for four runs in the third, as a leadoff triple for Haab made way for a walk, a
Nico Senese breakout double, and a single all in that order would put the score at 7-3. Habb's triple was one of four triples for the offense on the afternoon, the most in a game since they had five in 1975 against Saint Leo.
Â
The score would eventually go to 9-5 at the halfway point of the contest, after a sacrifice fly would plate one for the Eagles. Both offenses would die down some the next few frames as no runs would be scored for the next two full innings. Campbell would come storming back in the bottom of the seventh, though, as a two-RBI single would cut the lead to two before another infield single would cut the score to 9-8.
Â
However, the Eagles would explode with their bats the last few innings. After a Haab single and a walk, a major error on a routine fly ball to left field off the bat of
Luke Odden would send two all the way around. The very next batter saw
Josh Tate double to the left-center hole to give the Eagles a four-run cushion. A silent bottom of the eighth would give way to
JP Herrholz hitting a fly ball to center field that took a massive hop over the Camels' center fielder for an eventual two-RBI inside-the-park home run, the first since 2017for the Eagles.
Â
Although another two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth would make the score a bit closer,
Davis Smith would close the door in his three innings pitched, securing the series win for the Southern squad.
Â
The Eagles' seven extra-base hit on the day was the most in a contest since March 26
th of last year against Charleston. With 16 hits on the afternoon as well, it was the most since April 23
rd of last year in a win against Mercer. Five Eagles had multi-hit performances, including Herrholz who shot a triple and a little league home run in five plate appearances.
Â
Next for the Eagles is a midweek bout on Tuesday against Charleston Southern, that was originally scheduled for last Wednesday. First pitch at J.I. Clements Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
