STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis capped off a perfect weekend with a 6-1 win over visiting Stetson on Sunday at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles improves to 5-4 overall with the victory, while Stetson falls to 4-2. Georgia Southern avenged a 5-2 loss to the Hattters last year in Deland. The match was delayed by an hour and a half due to inclement weather.
Georgia Southern took the doubles point from the Gamecocks with a 6-4 win from Aaron James Williams and Laurent Julia Calac at No. 2 doubles and a 6-3 win from Matthew Mitchell and Pierre Mouesca at No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles then got straight-set singles wins from Mouesca at No. 4 singles and Williams at No. 3 singles. Castillo then delivered the clinching point with a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.Â
Dimitris Paliouras won a second-set tiebreak to finish off a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, while Matthew Mitchell outlasted Sami Ozzor in three sets for the final margin.
"Compared to last year's match playing against these guys, I thought we were much more comfortable today with the chaos going on, the conditions and the circumstances," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "The guys stayed together as a team and I'm really proud of how they competed and played for each other. The results reflect that because they were focused on the right things."
Georgia Southern will hit the road for a stretch of four straight matches away from Statesboro, beginning with an 11 a.m. match at Kennesaw State on Friday, February 21.
