No. 6 Eagles Fall to No. 8 Mountaineers, 2-0

Morgantown, W.V. --- The No. 6 Georgia Southern men's soccer team (8-1-1, 2-1 SBC) fell to the No. 8 Mountaineers of West Virginia (7-1-2, 3-0 SBC) by a 2-0 margin on Saturday night (October 4th).
Both offenses came out firing to start the contest, including a fifth minute shot from Mitch Picksley that hit off the side woodwork for the Eagles' first chance of the contest. Just under 20 minutes later, a foul on Finn Steele in the box would be reviewed and awarded a penalty kick for West Virginia, in which they would convert on to take the lead. It would be the first time all season that Georgia Southern allowed the first goal of a match and would eventually be the first time in 2025 in which they entered the locker room facing a deficit.
In the second half, the Mountaineers defense shone through, only allowing two shots through the first 25 minutes of the final period. In the 50th minute, a chance from Ryan Holmes with space just inside the box would be saved by the opposing keeper. In the 71st minute, West Virginia would double their lead from a tap in from Marcus Caldeira after a low cross got through the box for the score. In the final few minutes of the contest, Noah Holmestrom would have a shot on target, but was once again saved by the Mountaineers to close out the match.
West Virginia only edged out the Eagles 12-9 on shots on the evening, but had double the amount of shots on target (3-6). Despite the two goals, Nate Martinez would makes four saves and fend off eight corner kicks. Once again, it was a physical game between the two as 21 total fouls were called, with four Mountaineers and three Eagles in the books with a yellow card.
With the defeat, it snaps the Eagles' seven match win streak that tied the program record, matching the streak that the 1997 squad set. It also would be the first contest in 2025 in which they would allow multiple goals.
The No. 6 Eagles continue their road trip with a trip to UCF on Friday (October 10th) to continue Sun Belt play. Kickoff in Orlando is set for 7 PM.
