
Eagles Draw with No. 5 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer earned a 2-2 draw against No. 5 Clemson on Tuesday night at Historic Riggs Field, behind a pair of second-half goals from Mitch Picksley.
The Eagles move to 6-1-3 on the season, while Clemson moves to 9-2-1.
Neither side found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes. Georgia Southern put two of its three first-half shots on frame, with Owen Barker forcing a save in the 11th minute before Toby Nevile tested Clemson goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic in the 16th minute. Clemson finished the opening half with three shots as the teams entered the break scoreless.
Georgia Southern broke through in the 52nd minute. Barker found Picksley, who finished the opportunity to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Clemson began to apply pressure following the opening goal, but Georgia Southern's defense held the Tigers off the board. Nicolas Aristizabal made saves in the 52nd and 65th minutes to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Picksley struck again in the 78th minute, finding the back of the net for the second time on the night to double the Eagles' advantage to 2-0. The brace marked Picksley's first multi-goal performance of the season.
The Tigers responded just 95 seconds later. Duncan Wilson scored in the 80th minute off assists from Mason Jimenez and Remi Okunlola to cut the Georgia Southern advantage to one.
Clemson completed the comeback in the 82nd minute when Tigers leading scorer Ransford Gyan found the back of the net off assists from Alessio Andreottola and Christian Scott, leveling the match at 2-2.
Georgia Southern had two late opportunities to retake the lead. Paul Moodie put an attempt on frame in the 88th minute before Broden Beorlegui forced another save in the 89th, but neither side could find a winner as the match ended level.
Clemson finished with a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks, while Georgia Southern held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Aristizabal finished with three saves for the Eagles.
The draw gives Georgia Southern a result against a nationally ranked opponent for the second time this season.
"Really proud of the group. We showed our character and strength in depth, but we also showed our quality. We can go toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the nation," Eagles Head Coach Lee Squires said. "We've got to regroup quickly now and get ready for Marshall University, but still immensely proud of the boys and their performance tonight."Â
Next up, the Eagles return to Sun Belt Conference play on Friday, traveling to Huntington, W.Va., for a matchup against Marshall. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m.
