STATESBORO, Ga. — The Georgia Southern Men's Soccer team used three first-time goal scorers and another strong defensive performance to shut out rival Georgia State, 3-0, Friday night at Bo Pitts Field.
The Eagles improved to 6-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, while the Panthers fell to 5-4-2 and 0-2-1 in league action.
Georgia Southern controlled the attack early, recording the first five shots of the match before Georgia State registered its first attempt in the 23rd minute. The Eagles continued to apply pressure, forcing Panthers goalkeeper Jackson Burrell into five saves over the opening 35 minutes.
The breakthrough came in the 40th minute when Joe O'Connor found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Charlie Votel provided the assist to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Less than a minute later, Georgia Southern struck again. Emil Corfitzen found Owen Barker, who finished the opportunity in the 41st minute for his first goal of the season and first as an Eagle, doubling the Eagles advantage heading into halftime.
The Eagles wasted little time adding to their lead after the break. In the 49th minute, Corfitzen scored his first goal of the season off Votel's second assist of the night, pushing the advantage to 3-0. Corfitzen finished the match with three points on a goal and an assist.
Georgia Southern's defense kept the Panthers off the board the rest of the way. Luca Maxim made three saves to record the clean sheet as the Eagles held Georgia State to seven total shots and three shots on goal. Georgia Southern finished with an 18-7 advantage in shots and put 12 attempts on frame.
The victory marked the first time since 2014 that Georgia Southern defeated Georgia State at home. The Eagles have now defeated the Panthers in consecutive meetings and have scored three or more goals in back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
O'Connor, Barker and Corfitzen each recorded their first goals of the season, while Votel collected two assists.
Next Up, Georgia Southern travels to South Carolina, to take on Clemson on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
