Southern Scribes Gives Eagle Athletes Opportunities Through the Written Word

STATESBORO - Stories told by student-athletes about student-athletes is the premise of Georgia Southern Athletics' "Southern Scribes" program which gives its student-athletes a platform to share their own personal stories and the stories of others. Now concluding its first full year, over 20 articles and features have been written and published on GSEagles.com as a unique way to tell the Georgia Southern story.
This past semester, rifle All-American Addy Burrow worked in the communications office as part of her Master's program in professional communication and leadership, focusing on writing and editing releases and articles to help prepare her for her desired career in book publishing and editing.
"Being a part of the Southern Scribes program here, and being able to extend that into an internship, has been an incredible experience," Burrow said. "I have been able to not only further my writing skills, but work in a professional environment, develop interview skills, and be a part of communicating the importance of our student-athlete experiences. This has been a really awesome opportunity and something that I think any student-athlete who is interested in writing in any capacity would benefit from."
Created in late 2022, the Southern Scribes program has seen participation from athletes in football, rifle, swimming & diving, as well as regular students. Staff members of the communications office help with story ideas, question formulation and the setting up of interviews and then proof and edit any submissions before publication. A majority of the participants have been public relations or communications major, but the program is open to any athlete who would like to write about Eagle athletics.
"We are excited about the future of our first-person writing series by our own student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Jared Benko. "Through their unique perspectives, this series showcases the amazing stories of our student-athletes from a peer standpoint. The first year of the program and we kicked it off was a success and we look forward to sharing even more of these features in the months ahead!"
