HARRISONBURG, Va. - Georgia Southern women's tennis wrapped up its weekend Sun Belt trip to Virginia with a 4-3 win over James Madison on Sunday in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Eagles improved to 17-4 overall and 6-3 in the league with the win, while James Madison falls to 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the Sun Belt with the loss. The Eagles will wrap up the 2024 regular season on Saturday, April 20, traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia State in a 10 a.m. Sun Belt contest.
Georgia Southern came out strong in doubles, earning the point with a 6-2 win from Ninon Martinache and Sonja Keranen over Daria Munteanu and Ines Oliveira at No. 1 doubles, as well as a 6-2 win from Lindsay Tulenko and Paula Hijos over Reka Matko and Hope Moulin at No. 3 doubles.
Ninon Martinache stretched the Eagles' lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Munteanu at No. 1 singles. After JMU took a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, Sonja Keranen delivered a 6-3. 6-2 win over Alexandra Prudente at No. 6 singles to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
JMU closed the gap to 3-2 with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles, but Hijos clinched the victory with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Matko at No. 5 singles.
"The girls really fought hard today," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "It seems whenever the squad is faced with adversity, they find any way possible to fight through it and come out on top. I still feel like our best tennis is in front of us. I believe all of the women are ready to GATA and put in the hard fight for the remainder of the season and I can't wait to see all that come together."
