Eagles Defeat Louisiana, 4-1, On Friday

Crisp singles leads Georgia Southern past the Ragin' Cajuns for Sun Belt road win

Box Score

LAFAYETTE, La. - Georgia Southern women's tennis collected a 4-1 Sun Belt Conference women's tennis win over host Louisiana on Friday at the Cajun Courts in Lafayette, La.

The Eagles improved to 12-2 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt with the win, while Louisiana fell to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the league. Georgia Southern wraps up its weekend road swing on Sunday, taking on Texas State in an 11 a.m. Sun Belt contest in San Marcos.

Louisiana captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Sonja Keranen and Ninon Martinache earned a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Carla Urchoeguia and Angelique Berrat.

The Eagles won four first sets and had leads in the other two when rains began to fall over the Cajun Courts complex. After a one hour and 25 minute rain delay, play resumed on all courts.

Georgia Southern quickly tied the match after the delay with a 6-1, 6-1 win from Martinache over Cristina Tchanichev at No. 2 singles. Paula Hijos delivered a 7-5, 6-2 win over Paige Duncan at No. 6 singles, then Lindsay Tulenko clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jenaila Prulla at No. 3 singles.

The rains then returned and halted the other two matches in progress.

"I wasn't exactly the happiest with the way we started doubles," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "But I was pleased with how we finished, even though we didn't get the point. But being able to come back and win all six first sets in singles, that's one way to put pressure on the scoreboard where the other team looks up and says, 'that's a long way to come back.' I feel like we did a good job to flush the doubles point out of our mind and every one of our women found a way to create their own momentum in singles. On every court we did that, and I was extremely pleased."
