Women's Tennis Downs Davidson, 5-2, On Saturday

Doubles point key in Georgia Southern's road win over the Wildcats

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Georgia Southern women's tennis traveled to Davidson on Saturday morning and picked up a 5-2 win over the host Wildcats in Davidson, N.C.

The Eagles moved to 9-1 on the season with the victory, while Davidson falls to 5-3. Georgia Southern completes its weekend in North Carolina on Sunday, taking on Queens (NC) in Charlotte in a 10 a.m. match.

Georgia Southern earned a tightly contested doubles point thanks to Sonja Keranen and Ninon Martinache's 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles as well as  Mackenzie Leopold and Sophie Wagemaker's 7-6 (5) win at No. 3 doubles.

The Eagles and Wildcats split first sets in singles. Georgia Southern would take a 2-0 lead with Martinache's 6-2, 6-2 win over Savanna Kollock at No. 2 singles, but Davidson would earn the win at No. 3 singles to make the score 2-1. All four of the other singles matches would go three sets.

Paula Hijos made it a 3-1 lead for the Eagles with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Ines Roti at No. 6 singles. Davidson would take the win at No. 3 singles, but Georgia Southern would clinch the victory with Silvia Martinez' 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1 win over Emma Heiderscheidt at No. 1 singles. Mackenzie Leopold also claimed a three-set win in her match at No. 5 singles, defeating Olivia Hooper, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

"Today was a real battle," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Davidson simply never gives up and they make life extremely difficult. Especially once you begin stringing points together. They always find ways to disrupt one's rhythm. They are well coached and have a tremendous amount of grit. There's no doubt that we improved today in having to deal with their tenaciousness.

"I feel earning the doubles point was instrumental in us having success today," McCaffrey said. "Both Sonja and Ninon were unstoppable and Sophie and Mackenzie had to dig deep in order to win their match, battling back from being down 5-2. In singles, having Pauli, Silvi and Mac earning their wins in three hard-fought sets was key. These ladies continue to show that they refuse to give up and resiliency is a trademark of this program."
