Eagles Drop Regular Season Finale at South Carolina, 3-0

Columbia, S.C. --- The Georgia Southern men's soccer team fell in their final regular season match of the 2024 campaign at South Carolina, 3-0, this past Tuesday night (November 5th).

Throughout the match, the Eagles proved why they have had consistent offensive pressure early on in the match. In the opening twenty minutes, the Eagles put up multiple shots, including a shot from Ricky Louis that was saved right to Ryan Holmes who had his shot blocked as well to take away chances from the Eagles. However, in the 22nd minute, another Georgia Southern offensive opportunity was rejected as after a pass was stolen away, the Gamecocks sent a long ball that traveled nearly the entire pitch and into the lap of Harrison Myring, who even though his shot was blocked by Nate Martinez, it still trickled into the back of the net for South Carolina to take the lead.

The halftime whistle saw the Eagles hold a slight shots advantage, 6-5, with each team taking a corner kick. Martinez also had two saves in the opening 45 minutes as well. The final 45 saw more of the same: Georgia Southern continuing to pressure offensively while the Gamecocks capitalized on the few chances they had. The Gamecocks scored in both the 64th and 83rd minutes to run away with the match, even though Georgia Southern led astronimically in a few key categories.

The Eagles doubled up the Gamecocks in shots with their 18-9 advantage, with eight of Southern's being on target to the Gamecocks five. Georgia Southern also had a major 9-1 corner kick advantage, but the Gamecocks' keeper, Filip Versterre, made eight saves on the night to record a clean sheet. The Eagles are still looking for their first win over the Gamecocks in program history.

Georgia Southern (6-6-4, 2-5-2 SBC) received the help they needed to keep their season alive as both Georgia State and Coastal Carolina fell in their respective matches. However, with Old Dominion winning their match against James Madison, the Eagles have secured the eight seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. They will play at top-seeded West Virginia this upcoming Sunday, November 10th. Kickoff in Morgantown is set for 3 PM ET.
