Volleyball Splits First Two Games of Campbell Invitational

Ally Barnhart tied a 17-year old three-set record for total blocks in the second game

BUIES CREEK, N.C.– Georgia Southern volleyball (6-1) saw its five-game win streak come to an end in the first game of the Campbell Invitational against UTSA (5-2) but bounced back with an impressive win over San Jose State (5-3).

G1: UTSA 3 (25-22, 25-23, 25-14), Georgia Southern 0

UTSA used several big runs in sets to take all three from the Eagles, including a 25-14 win in the third set.

"We struggled to establish rhythm throughout the match, but I'm proud of how we battled in the first two sets," head coach Chad Willis said. "Some unforced errors late got the best of us. It was a learning opportunity on the road to handle the red zone with a little more discipline and focus."

The effort of the Eagles in the first match is not reflected in the score. The team got down by as much as six in the first set but battled back to tie it at 20 late. Despite the furious effort to make a comeback, the Roadrunners were too much, taking the first frame 25-22.

The Eagles seemed to gain momentum in the second set, as a Callaway Cason ace forced a timeout up 19-16, but the timeout quelled any momentum as UTSA stormed back to take a 25-23 win.

Georgia Southern was stunned in the third and final set, falling behind as much as 11 points. Despite adding two more points, the deficit proved too much to overcome, as back-to-back UTSA kills sealed a 25-14 and 3-0 game victory for the Roadrunners.

Chamblee Russell recorded nine kills, while Ailie Hair's six blocks were a match-high. Jordan Christy also contributed five blocks and five kills.

G2: Georgia Southern 3 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17), SJSU 0

GS bounced back in a big way in the second game of the day, taking down San Jose State 3-0, who had previously topped host Campbell.

"This game was a great response. The team challenged themselves to be a little more disciplined and play with urgency," Willis said. "We were connected from the start, got back to our priorities and really owned the net defensively. I am proud of the bounce back and it was another great learning moment for what kind of team we want to be on the road."

The Eagles were not looking to fall behind to start the game as they did in the first set of game one, storming to a 6-2 advantage early. While the rest of the frame went back and forth, the initial advantage for the blue & white was enough to earn the team a 25-19 victory.

A late 5-0 run in the second set was enough to be the difference between the two teams, as a Reagan Barth and Hair block sealed a 25-22 win. Ally Barnhart had three consecutive kills early on to go up as much as five.

San Jose State did briefly lead in the third set, but a massive 8-1 scoring rally for the Eagles highlighted by a trio of Barnhart block assists pushed the team to a 25-17 victory. Barnhart paired once with Hair and twice with Jillian Gray during the block party.

Barth's nine kills led the way, while Paige Powers had eight kills and three aces. Ally Barnhart's ten total blocks tied a three-set program record, initially set by Jennifer Schenk in 2006 against Lafayette.

The Eagles will take on host Campbell at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday to close the tournament.
