Box Score BOONE, N.C. - Izzy Wood's goal from distance in the 47th was the difference as Appalachian State claimed a 1-0 Sun Belt Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Friday evening in Boone.
The Mountaineers (5-3-3, 2-0-2 SBC) remained unbeaten in Sun Belt play with the win, while the Eagles fell to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the league with the loss. Georgia Southern returns to action on Thursday, October 4, hosting Louisiana in a 6 p.m. Sun Belt contest at Eagle Field.
Both teams hit the crossbar with chances in the first half - the Mountaineers' Olivia Simon in the sixth minute and the Eagles' Smith Cathey in the 42nd minute. Georgia Southern goalkeeper Quinn Wilson also kept things scoreless by pushing a long-range shot from Wood in the 37th minute. But the match went into halftime 0-0, with the Eagles holding an 11-7 edge in shots.
Wood's goal in the second half completely changed the complexion of the match. A goal kick by the Eagles played down the right side was intercepted by the Mountaineers, and Wood got onto a rolling ball just outside the box in the 47th minute, shooting it in for her fifth goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.
Bri Conley had the Eagles' best chance to equalize in the 52nd minute as App State goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston was out of her box when the ball came to Conley, but her shot went wide right.
Eagleston finished the match with six saves for the Mountaineers, while Wilson also had six saves for the Eagles. Shots ended up tied at 18-all between the two teams. Georgia Southern held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, and the Eagles were whistled for 10 fouls and one offsides on the evening, with App State whistled for six fouls and three offsides.
