STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern men's tennis team will begin competition in the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championship on April 20 in Peachtree City, Ga., against the Troy Trojans. First serve from the Peachtree City Tennis Center is set for 2 p.m.
Georgia Southern earned the fifth seed in the tournament as the result of a three-way tie breaker between Troy, GS, and Georgia State. Each team was 1-1 against each other, so the conference had to move to a second tiebreaker, highest total of completed head-to-head team points won. In this, Troy had seven points, GS had six, and Georgia State had four, which seeded the three teams at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 respectively.
Georgia Southern and Troy have already met once this season, with the Trojans topping the Eagles 4-2 in Troy on April 10. As a single-elimination format, the winner will get a rematch with the top-seeded and regular season co-champion South Alabama, while the loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
Two standouts for Georgia Southern enjoyed postseason recognition from the SBC, as sophomore
Pol del Castillo Masich was named to the First Team All-Conference squad while freshman
Pierre Mouesca was named to the Second Team All-Conference squad.
Troy also won several awards from the SBC, with Mario Martinez Serrano being named both SBC Player to Watch and Freshman of the Year, the latter being an award the Georgia Southern's own Del Castillo won last season. Serrano and Carles Anton were both named First Team All-Conference for singles.
