Why did you choose Georgia Southern?
I loved all the resources Southern provided. It really felt like rifle was taken seriously by the athletic department and they wanted to see the team thrive. I loved the campus as well, it just felt like home.
What's your major and why did you choose it?
Psychology. I have always thought anything psychological was interesting. it originally sparked because I planned on going into criminal psychology but those plans changed once I got to college and I leaned more towards sports psychology because the mental side of sports became really interesting to me.Â
When will you graduate and what are your plans post-graduation?
I will be graduating this May. Post-graduation I will be doing an internship with Athletes In Action, a ministry for student-athletes, but I will specifically be working with the athletes here at Georgia Southern. Following that, I plan to pursue a Master's degree in sports psychology.Â
What's one thing you are thankful for that Georgia Southern rifle helped give you?
A family. I love my teammates so much and everyone we work with is so incredible and it will definitely be strange not seeing some of these people every single day like I'm so used to.
What's been the coolest non-rifle thing you've done that coming to GS gave you the opportunity to do?
While it hasn't happened yet, this spring I will be going to Costa Rica with other Georgia Southern student-athletes as a part of Athletes In Action. We will be providing clean water filters to communities as well as sharing the gospel with them. I can't wait for this experience!
For a recruit looking to come and shoot here, what would be your sales pitch to get them here?
The coaching staff is incredible. Soren and Abby have so much knowledge and truly care about building relationships with their athletes. It's been a great year being able to work with them and I think that is such a key part to a great programs. Also, all the resources we have with academic advisors, athletic trainers, and such. All the programs we have set in place to make sure we succeed is like nothing else I've ever seen.Â
When you come back and watch a match in five years, what will you hope Coach Butler says about you to those team members:
That I was a positive individual who is optimistic and hard-working and even when things didn't work out exactly how I wanted them to, I would always come back and keep trying and didn't let it bring me down or stop me.Â
What's your proudest accomplishment as a GS shooter in your time here?
My freshman year, making the second-team all-conference for air rifle was pretty cool. Also, breaking my aggregate record while shooting in Alaska was pretty cool.
What's one memory from your time with GS rifle you will always carry with you?
There are honestly so many that come to mind. I think the ones that make me smile the most and laugh are the times when we would have team dinners and I'll just be joking around with one another with Soren and Abby. Another would probably be when the team was all together looking at the Northern Lights ... it was unreal.Â
Looking back, what's one thing you would tell your freshman self?
Just be yourself. You are fine just the way you are and there's no need to change yourself to try and fit into groups or make certain friends. Also, get involved. I didn't start getting involved with different components in the athletic department until the end of my junior year and this year and I wish that I had more time with the friends that I've made.Â
Favorite place to relax or study on campus?
The Starbucks on campus has been one of my favorite places to go and get work done. I also have a coffee addiction so that's part of it as well. However, our team room has been recently redone and it's so fun to go hang out in there and get work done in my spare time or watch TV.
Favorite place to eat on campus?
Honestly, at any other time I would 100% say Chick-fil-A. But recently the sandwich shop in Russell Union has been so good!
Favorite GS tradition?
Watching Freedom fly at the beginning of football games is always an unreal experience.
Favorite Coach Butler phrase or saying?
Every single practice, right before we get on the line to start shooting, Soren will always say "let's get after it." I don't know why, but I love this and if there are ever days that he doesn't say it, people will point it out because it just doesn't feel right if he doesn't say it before we start shooting. Â
Georgia Southern takes on UAB on Saturday at the Shooting Sports Education Center in SoCon action. Call to the line is set for 8 a.m. with Senior Day following around 12:30 p.m.
