ATLANTA– Georgia Southern volleyball (16-4, 6-3 Sun Belt) earned another key Sun Belt win, cruising to a 3-0 sweep of in-state rival Georgia State (5-15, 2-7 SBC) winning 25-14, 25-17, 25-14 on Friday.
"Great result tonight, I'm really proud of the way our group executed the game plan," head coach
Chad Willis said. "We talked all week about controlling our side and playing clean. Quick turnaround with an opportunity to win the weekend tomorrow."
Georgia Southern rolled through the opening set with a 25-14 win, using several big runs throughout to take control. Kills were spread around evenly, as both
Chamblee Russell and
Reagan Barth each recorded two.
Also in the first set,
Kirsten Barrett reached 500 career assists in just one-and-a-half seasons.
The second set was tied at six before a 4-0 GS run gave the visitors the lead for good. Barth added four more kills and a block to pave the way for a 25-15 win in set two, closed by a
Jillian Gray kill.
The Eagles used a 6-1 run in the middle of set three to pull away and earn a clean sweep. The 25-14 victory was highlighted by four Russell kills and five by Barth.
Barth's ten kills were a match-high, continuing her solid freshman campaign. Russell contributed eight.
Ashlyn Lovett led the floor with ten digs, and
Ailie Hair's four total blocks were also a match-high.
The Eagles kept pace in third place in the East while moving to 16-4.
Georgia Southern will do battle with the Panthers once again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
