Southern Scribes: Pink Walk Schedule to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer

Event to take place Oct. 21

Grace Drawdy is a junior multimedia journalism major from Cumming, Georgia, who competes on the Eagle swimming & diving team. She is part of the Southern Scribes, which consists of Georgia Southern student-athletes writing about their department.

STATESBORO - The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is partnering with the Student Government Association (SGA) and sorority Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) to host a Pink Walk to fundraise and raise awareness for breast cancer. The Pink Walk is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 8 a.m. Participants will walk a loop around Sweetheart Circle and athletic facilities to raise awareness for breast cancer and fundraise. All donations will go directly to benefit The Georgia Alliance for Breast Cancer.

With the month of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as well as the Sun Belt Conference community service initiative being breast cancer awareness, the walk is one of many events throughout the month that support this cause. That same weekend, Georgia Southern football plans to host their Tackle for a Cure game as they face ULM at home.

SGA's vice president Ola Victor is excited that this is the group's first inaugural event and hopes this event will continue in the future.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity for both organizations to combine our strengths and resources towards a common cause. It's inspiring to see different groups come together for a shared goal" Victor said.

Georgia Southern's chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha also plans to take part and make a stand to fight breast cancer here on campus. Zeta Tau Alpha's nationally recognized philanthropy effort is Think Pink, which allows chapters around the nation to unite around a single cause.

"Each sorority has a different philanthropy, in which their main goal is to raise awareness, money and support for the cause" said Zeta Tau Alpha's philanthropy chair at Georgia Southern, Amber Bishop. "ZTA's philanthropy is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. Through local and national partnerships we work to make the one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, none in eight women."

The organization's hope to attract more than just current students and student athletes. The organization also welcomes alumni, local residents, and football fans that may be in town for the football game later that afternoon.

"Partnering with SGA [and ZTA] will allow this event to reach more people to raise awareness for breast cancer." Says SAAC vice president and head of community service representative, Ella Zierdt. "This partnership is a great way to bridge the community between students and student athletes."

The Pink Walk is working to provide refreshments such as doughnuts and coffee at the walk as well as giving out t-shirts to the first 150 attendees.
