Eagles score twice in the final 20 minutes of the match against Old Dominion
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team fell 4-2 in the Sun Belt Conference opener against Old Dominion on Saturday, September 17, at Eagle Field.
Old Dominion (3-2-1) got on the board first with a goal in the 12', followed by one in the 24' and a third one in the 39'. After taking a 3-0 lead into the half, ODU scored its fourth goal of the night in the 46'.
Georgia Southern (1-5-0) got on the board in the 63' bya Manuel Prieto kick in the lower right corner of the goal, assisted by Ervinas Vilkaitis. In the 83', Prieto scored his second goal of the season and the game with a header into the net, assisted by Hilary Odhiambo. The Eagles had an uptempo attack for the remaining minutes of the match, but time ran out and ODU escaped with a 4-2 victory.
"Sometimes it just doesn't go your way, but you can't capitulate completely," head coach John Murphy said. "I'm proud of the guys, they showed a lot more fight in the second half. We weren't outmatched, we were much more competitive and and again, we're kind of learning on the job which is a tough way to do any profession, certainly at this level of play."
"We've got to dust ourselves off, and fortunately, we have a game on Tuesday down at Jacksonville and we have to prepare for that game. You have to get over these kind of results quickly and move on to the next thing. I'm disappointed, but I think there are things we can take from this performance that will bode well going forward."
