SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Georgia Southern football team went back to its roots on Saturday, hosting a live scrimmage and kids' clinic at Memorial Stadium as the Eagles continue to ramp up their preparations for the season opener on Sept. 3 against Morgan State.
The "1" offense went right down the field on the opening drive as quarterback
Kyle Vantrease went 4-for-4 for 67 yards, capped by a 44-yard pass to
Jeremy Singleton, and
Jalen White scored on a 1-yard run. That would be all the work for Vantrease as he donned a baseball cap the rest of the way.
Gerald Green scored on rushing touchdowns of 1 yard and 6 yards to cap the scoring.
Three kickers combined to go 9-for-10 on field goals, led by
Alex Raynor's 4-for-4 with a long of 52 yards.
Michael Lantz went 3-for-4 with a long of 47 yards.
Bryce Christensen made both of his kicks.
Green and White combined for 56 yards rushing and three scores on just 14 carries while Singleton led the way with four catches for 65 yards.
Derwin Burgess Jr. had three catches for 56 yards and
Marcus Sanders Jr. hauled in three passes for 35 yard.
Defensively,
Zyon McGee led the way with a pair of interceptions.
Isaac Walker and
Wylan Free also had picks and the defense registered a pair of touch sacks from
Jeffrey Smyth and
Jalen Jackson.
Afterwards, the team and coaches put on a spirited kids' clinic on the field which gave the players time to interact and teach with the participants.
Georgia Southern played four games at Memorial Stadium in its infant years of starting the program back up for the modern era, once in 1982, twice in 1983 and once in 1984.
The team will now move into its mock preparation week and will go into its normal game-week schedule.
