EL DORADO, Ark. – Little Rock's Jansen Smith and Magnus Lumholt rolled in a pair of birdie putts on the par-3 16th hole to take control of their matches and lead the Trojans to a 3-1-1 win over Georgia Southern in the championship match of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship Wednesday at Mystic Creek Golf Club.
Smith trailed Eagle freshman
Hogan Ingram by a hole when he rolled in a downhill 15-footer for birdie on 16 and then went on to halve 17 and 18. Lumholt was all square with Eagle senior
Mason Williams before he crammed in a 35-footer uphill for a birdie on 16 to go 1UP, and the duo halved 17.
Georgia Southern won its semifinal match 3-2 over Georgia State to advance to the final vs. the Trojans. Senior
Ben Carr won both his matches today, while Ingram and senior
Wilson Andress each went 1-1.
The story vs. Little Rock
The Eagles were trailing in four of the five matches as the groups made the turn and lost two of them but fought back in the other two. Trailing by one, Ingram birdied 11 to square his match and went 1UP by making par to win 13. Williams squared his match with a par at 13. Meanwhile, Carr won holes 7 and 8 to make the turn at 2UP and then won 12, 13 and 14 to end his match and put a point on the board for the Eagles.
The story vs. State
Carr was the last Eagle on the course and was all square through 11. He parred holes 12, 13 and 14 to win all three and go 3UP and then halved 15 and 16 to earn the 3&2 win. Andress won holes 4, 5 and 6 to take a 3UP lead early and was 4UP through 14. He lost holes 15 and 16 but made par at 17 to win the hole and the match 3&1. Ingram won holes 2, 3 and 8 and birdied 9 to make the turn with a 4UP advantage, and he went on to par 15 to win the hole and the match 5&3.
Quotables from Coach Carter Collins
"What a week in Arkansas. I'm proud of the team from beginning to end. To win stroke play for a second year in a row and then win a hard-fought match against Georgia State this morning, we accomplished a lot. We played so hard against Little Rock. We were punched in the mouth early but showed a lot of heart and fought all the way back to have a chance. Our opponents played fantastic; they made some huge putts on the last few holes to win it. Credit to them for a great week and congratulations to them on being Sun Belt champions. Mystic Creek held its own yet again - what a great and challenging golf course. I'm excited with how hard we competed; we just need to be sharper at our next opportunity. I love this team. Hail Southern!!"
