Paden Pitches a Gem, Eagles Clinch Series With 11-1 Win Over Georgia State

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team clinched the series against Georgia State with a dominant 11-1 win Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.
 
The Eagles were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a Noah Ledford groundout, scoring Jesse Sherrill. In the bottom of the second inning, Austin Thompson cranked a solo homer to left field to put the Eagles up 2-0, and a Sherrill RBI-single to left center field would score Kyler Hultgren to give the Eagles the 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Hultgren would single through the right side to score Sam Blancato and make it 4-0.
 
The bottom of the sixth inning saw the Eagles' offense explode for seven runs to put the game away and clinch the series. Noah Ledford had a two-RBI single and Sam Blancato drove in a run with a triple to highlight the inning and make it 11-0.
 
The Panthers would plate their line run in the seventh inning on a solo home run. After that, the Eagles would not allow another hit on the evening, sealing the game at 11-1 and the series for the Eagles.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Jaylen Paden struck out a career-high nine batters in picking up the win. The sophomore went six innings, allowing just two hits in moving to 4-0 on the season.
  • The Eagles have now won nine straight games at home.
  • Jesse Sherrill, Austin Thompson and Kyler Hultgren all had three hits to lead the offense. In all, the Eagles pounded out 16 hits on the evening.
  • Georgia Southern currently sits at ninth nationally in RPI. They are the top Sun Belt school (the closest is Georgia State at 32), and they are second in the state of Georgia (UGA is fourth).
  • The Eagles pitching staff totaled for 13 strikeouts tonight. Paden had nine, Thomas Ross had two, and Brooks Gorman had two.
  • The Eagles are tied for second place in the Sun Belt, with Texas State leading by half a game at the time of writing.

The Eagles will look for the sweep of Georgia State on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at J.I. Clements Stadium.
