Del Castillo and Roumpis Receive Sun Belt Postseason Awards

STATESBORO – Pol del Castillo Masich has been named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, and Alexandros Roumpis has been named to the Singles All-Sun Belt Second Team.

Del Castillo, a native of Tarragona, Catalunya, Spain, made an immediate impact in his freshman season by taking over the No. 1 position and turning in a solid first season in that spot. Del Castillo had a five-match singles win streak earlier in the season, taking down strong competition from Stetson and North Florida in the process. Del Castillo also took down the No. 1 position player from Louisiana and won three of his first four doubles matches in conference play. This is the first Freshman of the Year award won by an Eagles since Antonio Muniz won the award in 2019.

"What a great accomplishment for Pol," Georgia Southern men's tennis head coach Jeremy Bayon said on del Castillo's award. "Our coaching staff is so proud of him as he truly deserves this award. Playing the number one position as a freshman is a tough challenge in our league and Pol had some tremendous success. His game has grown tremendously due to his dedication and daily work ethic. Pol has the ability to become one of the best players in the Sun Belt next year, and make a name for himself nationally."

Roumpis was named to the Singles All-Sun Belt Second Team, after helping the Eagles power past strong opponents out of conference and in-conference. Roumpis defeated opponents from College of Charleston, North Florida, and Troy, culminating with a win over 65th-ranked Georgia State's No. 2 position player, capping off a strong regular season on the court.

"This award is a true recognition of Alex's level," said Bayon. "He has established himself as a very strong singles and doubles player in our league.  His energy and competitiveness are going to help him grow even more in the near future. His leadership on and off the court has been so valuable for our young team and our coaching staff, and that makes this award even more valuable!"

The Eagles will turn their focus to the Sun Belt Tournament, where they will face the second-seeded South Alabama. The preview of that match can be found here.
