STATESBORO - Jesse Sherrill took the first pitch he saw off his right shoulder with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to plate the winning run for Georgia Southern Sunday as the Eagles completed a three-game sweep over Arkansas State with a 7-6 win at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Trailing 6-5 going to the final inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs before
Parker Biederer drew a walk to tie it up and then Sherrill was plunked for the 10th time this season to plate
Jarrett Jenkins and send the dugout streaming onto the field in jubilation.
A-State (4-17, 0-6 SBC) scored three runs in the second inning, but the Eagles scored two in the bottom half of the frame, one on a single from
Jarrett Brown and one from Biederer. With the Red Wolves leading 5-2, GS cut into the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs on Biederer's home run to right field. The two traded runs later on with
Noah Ledford getting the Eagles back to within a run with a double in the seventh inning.
With two outs in the ninth inning,
Austin Thompson walked and
Noah Searcy singled to right field. After Brown walked to load the bases, Biederer and Sherrill came through with clutch at-bats to pull out the win.
Biederer had three hits and four RBI to lead the way for the Eagles at the plate while Brown had two hits to pace an offense that pounded out 11 hits.
Jay Thompson picked up the win in relief, throwing three scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The Eagles (17-7, 501 SBC) will be back in action on Tuesday at No. 17 Georgia in the rubber match of the season series before heading to Louisiana this weekend for a big three-game conference series in Lafayette.
