KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Georgia Southern baseball team fell to the No. 19 Tennessee Volunteers Friday evening, 9-0 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The game was opening day for both teams.
For the first three and a half innings, it was a pitcher's duel as the bats couldn't get rolling in the cold weather. The Vols got on the board in the fourth inning when Trey Lipscomb hit a home run to left field, giving them a 2-0 lead. The Eagles went into the top of the fifth and got some momentum going, with Will Patota getting walked to start the inning. Austin Thompson hit a single through the left side, setting up Georgia Southern with a runner in scoring position. But the Eagles stranded the two runners after a strikeout and a pop fly.
Tennessee got a single to start the bottom of the fifth, and after the Eagles retired the next batter, the Vols hit another two-run home run to take a 4-0 lead. Chase Burns was taken out after the fifth, only allowing two hits, one walk, and getting five strikeouts for the Vols.
Ty Fisher got the start for the Eagles and tossed 67 pitches, allowing four runs, six hits, one walk with two strikeouts. Jay Thompson came into the game, getting two outs via flyouts to the right field, but allowed a walk and a single before giving up a three-run home run, giving the Vols a 7-0 lead. Jay Thompson got the Eagles out of the inning without any additional damage.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ga'von Wray, who transferred from Tennessee, came in to pitch for Southern. The Vols put in a pinch hitter, who hit a solo home run to right-center field to make it 8-0. The inning ended with three straight outs, a strikeout swinging and two groundouts. UT would tack on one more run in the eighth stanza to account for the final tally.
The Eagles will send out sophomore Jaylen Paden to pitch on Saturday, while the Volunteers have not named a starting pitcher for the game.
