STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis wrapped up its three-match homestand with a 7-0 win over South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles improve to 3-2 with the victory, while South Carolina State (0-4) remains winless on the young season. Georgia Southern will next be in action on Saturday, taking on No. 38 FIU in a neutral-site match in Jacksonville, Fla., on the campus of the University of North Florida.
Georgia Southern swept the doubles point from the Bulldogs, then took five of six singles matches in straight sets as Nadja Meier, Dana Heimen, Silvia Martinez Jimenez, Paula Hijos and Elizabeth Goines all won at the top five singles spots. Sonja Keranen won a third-set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, (10-6), over Anabel Aguilar at No. 6 singles to complete the sweep.
"It was nice to come away with the win today," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "South Carolina State has a good and talented group of young women. We showed, once again, a strong level of resiliency, especially at the beginning of doubles play. At one point, we were down 3-2 and a break on all three courts. Once we recognized that we just needed to clean a few things up and that we would be ok, we finished very well.
"In singles, we saw that the wind was beginning to pick up quite a bit, so we were limited in what we wanted to do," McCaffrey said. "But once again, the ladies made some really nice adjustments and stayed extremely level-headed. Now, we will take a much needed day off before preparing for two extremely strong teams next weekend with FIU and North Florida."
