Eagles Blitz Chants, 90-75, For Fourth Straight Sun Belt Win

Georgia Southern celebrates Senior Day, finishes the home slate 12-3 at Hanner

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's basketball used a 24-0 run over an early 10-minute stretch in the contest to knock off Coastal Carolina, 90-75, on Saturday afternoon to run their current Sun Belt Conference win streak to four.

The Eagles (15-7, 6-4 SBC) claimed the victory over the Chanticleers (13-8, 3-7 SBC) on Senior Day at Hanner Fieldhouse. The win gave the Eagles a 12-3 record at Hanner. Georgia Southern honored its three seniors - Tsubasa Nisbet, Maya Banks and Rachel Johnson - in a pre-game ceremony.

Coastal Carolina's Blayre Schultz made a three-pointer just 33 seconds into the contest to put the Chanticleers up 3-0. But over the final nine and a half minutes, the Eagles held the Chants to 0-of-10 shooting from the floor and forced 10 turnovers as the Eagles went into the second quarter leading 23-3. A free throw by Lydia Freeman with 9:32 remaining in the second quarter capped the 24-0 run for the Eagles, who never relinquished the lead after that run.

The win is the fourth straight for Georgia Southern, the first four-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak for the Eagles since joining the league.

Terren Ward led all scorers on the day with 30 points, while Taya Gibson hit 7-of-8 shots from the floor for her 14 points. Mya Burns added 10 for the Eagles. Coastal Carolina placed two players in double figures as Jordyn Newsome had 24 points and Aja Blount added 19.

Ward became the first Georgia Southern player to register 30+ point performances in back-to-back games since Tracy Wilson had 35 points vs. Florida A&M on January 5, 1991, and 32 vs. VCU on January 8, 1991. She made 8-of-14 shots from the floor, while hitting a career-high five three-pointers and going 9-for-14 from the free throw line. Ward collected eight rebounds, notched three steals and three assists while also blocking a shot.

Stat of the Game
Georgia Southern forced 16 first-half turnovers by the Chanticleers in building a 40-22 lead at the break. The Eagles committed just five turnovers in the first half themselves.

"I didn't know it was 24 straight points offensively, but I was very excited with the defensive efforts. We did a phenomenal job; we got a 10-second backcourt, we got a shot clock violation, and we got charges. It was pleasing to see us lock in and play defensively like that."

"It's a step in the right direction. We know we're about to get ready to go on the road, and that's gonna be a challenge. But we took care of business. I'm proud of our ladies. We talked about how hard it is to lock in, after such a great win over App State, tonight against a good team like Coastal. But I'm happy we are putting winning games together."

The Eagles finish the 2021-22 regular season with four straight Sun Belt Conference games on the road, starting with Thursday, February 17, with an 8 pm contest at South Alabama.
