ATLANTA - No. 11-ranked Georgia Tech spoiled the NCAA Championships debut of visiting Georgia Southern women's tennis with a 5-0 win over the Eagles on Friday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta.
The Yellow Jackets (19-10) advance to the second round to face North Florida (18-7), who defeated Ole Miss 4-3 in Friday's first match. Georgia Southern ends the 2021 season at 19-9, setting a new school record for wins in addition to earning its first Sun Belt Conference title and first NCAA berth. The Eagles also came into the NCAAs riding an 11-match winning streak.
Georgia Tech won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point, then won all six first sets in singles play. The Yellow Jackets clinched the match with straight-set wins at No. 6, No. 4, No. 3 and No. 1 singles.
"Being able to play in our first NCAA Tournament has just given our ladies motivation for next year," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "There are things we will look forward to, improve on and I think it's just a good barometer of where we are at. And it's a good sign of what's to come.Â
"What we've been able to accomplish over the last few years is that, every year, we're getting a little further," Coach McCaffrey said. "We're living up to the mantra about getting 1% better each day. And having a showing here will help with recruiting and also provide confidence to the ladies that they can do it. I can already tell that we're hungry for next year."
The Eagles lose fifth-year senior Paula Boixader and senior Charlotte van Diemen from this season's squad and return nine players for 2021-22.
"I'm extremely proud to have coached both Paula and Lot over the last four to five years," Coach McCaffrey said. "I'm sad to see them go, and they will leave a big void. But I'm sure that we have some ladies who are excited to step up into those roles."
