Coach Graves takes a look at his position and gives an updated depth chart
STATESBORO - Spring practice is in the books and the Eagles now turn their attention to off-season workouts before reporting in early August for preseason camp. GSEagles.com caught up with each position coach to get a breakdown of their respective depth chart as well as their thoughts on their position group. Up sixth are the specialists with special teams coordinator Joe Graves.
What were your overall thoughts on your group this spring?
I think we're in a really good spot. Anthony Beck II had an awesome spring and he's primed for a great year. That's our expectations and we know he can do it. We know his capabilities on the field and as the leader of that group. We have a really good battle with our two kickers. Both Bryce Christensen and Alex Raynor did a heck of a job competing this spring and I'm excited to watch that battle in the fall.
What or who pleasantly surprised you this spring?
Amare Jones, the transfer from Tulane, was a playmaker on offense for us this spring, but has been really good in the return game, complementing Khaleb Hood.
What needs to priority number on the first day of camp this August?
All in all, I think we're in a good spot. We have to continue to get better and be consistent. We have to work on our technique on all of our units across the board, but I think we're in a good spot heading into fall.
Who are the leaders of your group?
We have a great culture of special teams here and that starts with the head man and works its way down. The guys buy into it and love playing special teams, which makes my job easy. Beck is the guy in the room who leads from a specialist standpoint and the guys follow his lead but we have guys wanting to play on coverage teams, return teams and blocking squads, so that says a lot about the culture with special teams here at Georgia Southern.
