Owens Remains Perfect, Eagles Defeat Chants in Opener

CONWAY, S.C. – Tyler Owens improved to 5-0 on the season, working 6.2 innings in the Eagles 8-2 victory over the Chanticleers. Owens allowed one run on three hits before exiting in the seventh. 
 
Georgia Southern opened up the scoring in the second inning, when Jason Swan hit his first home run of the season to left field. In the bottom half the Chanticleers would respond with a run of their own.
 
In the fourth, Jarrett Brown led off the inning with a solo-home run to left center field to break the 1-1 tie. Mason McWhorter would single later in the inning to add a run, before Noah Ledford singled through the right side to extend the lead to 4-1. From then on out it was all Georgia Southern.
 
The Eagles would tack on another run in the fifth, when Biederer doubled to the gap in right field to score JP Tighe from second. The very next inning the Eagles would score two more thanks to an Austin Thompson double down the line in right, followed by a Jason Swan single to right.
 
The Chants would cut the lead to five in the seventh, hitting a home run to right field. Mason McWhorter collected his second RBI of the night with a solo shot to right center field over the scoreboard. 
 
Georgia Southern baseball extended its winning streak to seven games and will look to take the series over the Chants on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Springs Brooks Stadium.

GAME NOTES
  • Jason Swan became the ninth different Eagle to homer this season.
  • Jarrett Brown became the 10th different Eagle to homer this season, his second career home run. 
  • Tyler Owens improved to 5-0 on the season, working 6.2 innings of three-hit, one-run baseball. Owens struck out six Chanticleers on the night.
  • Mason McWhorter hit his ninth home run of the season, a moonshot over the scoreboard in right field. McWhorter raised his season average to .412 on the season after the evening. 
  • Georgia Southern baseball extended their winning streak to seven in a row with the win on Friday night in Conway.
