STATESBORO - Visiting Stetson University claimed the doubles point with a tiebreak win at No. 1 doubles, then collected three straight-set singles match wins to pick up a 4-2 win over host Georgia Southern on Saturday morning at the Wallis Tennis Center.
Stetson moved to 4-4 on the season with the win, while Georgia Southern fell to 6-7. The Eagles will return to Sun Belt Conference action on Sunday, hosting Georgia State in a 2 p.m. matchup with the Panthers at Wallis.
The match began with the two teams splitting the lower doubles matches - Stetson picking up a win at No. 2 doubles, while Georgia Southern notched the win at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, the Eagles duo of
Charlotte van Diemen and
Nadja Meier trailed Danel Ashirova and Elodie Foster, 5-2, but rallied to tie the match at 6-all and force a tiebreak. The Stetson duo claimed the tiebreaker by a 7-2 score and earn the doubles point.
Each team won three first sets in the six singles matches. Stetson took a 3-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, while
Paula Hijos notched the Eagles' first point with a win at No. 6 singles.
Nadja Meier made the score 3-2 with a win at No. 2 singles, but Stetson's Brooke Milner came up with a crucial second-set break to win 6-2, 7-5 over
Sophie Wagemaker and clinch the match.
