STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern men's tennis team is set to host a pair of matches Saturday in its third and fourth straight home contests at the Wallis Tennis Center.
Action is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. with Kennesaw. Following a women's match, the team will return to face South Carolina-Upstate at 3:30 p.m.
Last time out:
The Eagles (4-5) opened their home schedule with a pair of wins over Gardner-Webb and South Carolina State this past weekend. In early action, the team beat the Runnin' Bulldogs 4-3 before taking out SCSU 4-0 in the afternoon. Freshman
Alexandros Roumpis was named Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for his performance over the weekend.
Murphy McCullough and
Santiago Suarez are currently ranked 47
th nationally in doubles play by ITA. The duo previously scored a 6-3 victory over No. 9 Franco Aubone and Benjamin Hannestad of Miami on Jan. 19.
Kennesaw State Series history:
The Eagles lead the series 6-2 including the past four straight. GS defeated KSU in 2019 by a score of 4-3 in the most recent meeting during a five-match winning streak.
USC-Upstate Series history:
The Eagles trail in the series 2-3 but have won the past two meetings. Georgia Southern defeated the Spartans in 2016 by a score of 6-1 in the most recent meeting during a six-match winning streak.
About KSU:
The Owls (1-1) have only played twice this season and are an even .500. The team fell to Georgia 1-8 on Jan. 20 before beating Samford 5-2 Feb. 1. In 2019, the Owls went 11-13, 4-2 ASUN and ended their season in the second round of the conference tournament.
About USC-Upstate:
The Spartans (0-3) after facing a tough schedule so far. The team opened the season with a 0-7 loss to No. 23 North Carolina State Jan. 11 followed by a cancelled match and a postponed match. They resumed play with 1-6 losses to Coastal Carolina and Davidson on Jan. 25 and Feb. 4 respectively.
What Eagles head coach Sander Koning had to say:
"We had a solid week of practice and I expect another tough weekend. We have seen in the past couple of weeks that if we trust ourselves and play aggressive, we put ourselves in a position to win matches. I will be looking for us to be consistent in our mindset and energy throughout the day."
