ORLANDO, Fla. - Stellar pitching was on display for Georgia Southern softball on day one of the Citrus Classic tournament at the Disney/ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. The Eagles notched a 5-1 win over Saint Joseph's (Pa.) in the first game, but dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Lehigh in the second game.
Georgia Southern moved to 5-2 on the year with the split and will continue action in the Classic on Saturday, taking on Bethune-Cookman at 2:30 p.m. and Charleston Southern at 5 p.m.Â
"Game one was a really good game," Georgia Southern Head Softball Coach
Kim Dean said. "Saint Joseph's is a quality opponent. We were figuring out how to attack their pitcher. Early on we did a good job of manufacturing a couple of runs, then Allyssah drove a ball deep opposite field that gave us more confidence.
Aaliyah Garcia threw a great game, and all in all it was a good team effort. In the second game, against another really good team in Lehigh, their quality lefty did just enough to squeeze out a win. We have a young team, and early in the season I'm proud of the fight and how we're consistently going late in games with them in reach. Rylee threw well, we did a great job defensively behind her, Ellington had another good diving catch. We're excited to get back at it tomorrow."
