South Alabama Takes Two from Eagle Volleyball

The Eagles and Jags meet in the final match of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.

MOBILE, Ala. – Mya Wilson tallied 21 kills and six blocks in two matches but Georgia Southern dropped a pair of contests to South Alabama Thursday at Jaguar Gymnasium. The Jaguars won the first match 3-2 and the second contest 3-0.

Wilson posted 13 kills and four blocks in the first match and notched eight kills and two blocks in the nightcap. Rebekah Farthing tallied 40 digs combined in the two contests, and Chamblee Russell had 17 kills and 18 digs on the day.

Match 1 Story
The Eagles (1-3, 1-3) evened the match 2-2 and jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the fifth as Wilson had four kills, and Farthing capped the spurt with an ace. Trailing 11-6,  Hannah Harris put down three balls, and South Alabama scored four straight to get within one point. After a Maddie Bryant kill put the Eagles ahead 13-11, South Alabama (6-8, 6-4) answered with three straight points to open a 14-13 lead. The Eagles fought off two set points, the second on a long rally, before Hannah Johnson and Harris posted consecutive kills for the Jags.

Match 2 Story
The Eagles had set point in both the first and second sets, but South Alabama came back to win both frames to open a 2-0 lead in the match. GS was ahead 24-19 in the first when Harris notched two kills and a block in a 6-0 Jag run. The Eagles fought off one set point, but South Alabama scored the next two to win the set. The Eagles led 24-21 in the second after a Baylor Bumford kill, but the Jags scored five consecutive points to win the set.

Quotables from Coach Chad Willis
"It's clearly not the outcome we wanted today, but I'm proud of our team's resilience—especially coming off two weeks without training."

"In this morning's match, we dug ourselves a pretty early hole but fought our way back into the match and gave ourselves some opportunities in the fifth; we just came up short."

"In the nightcap, I thought despite coming off the emotional and physical toll of a tough five-setter, our energy and effort level were consistent throughout. Again, we had opportunities in each set but just couldn't finish. We're doing some really nice things on both sides of the ball to create those opportunities, and we talked as a team about what it takes to learn from these kind of matches. We're looking forward to regrouping and getting back out there tomorrow."
