Eagles To Face The Citadel and Clemson

Georgia Southern hosts first home match Jan. 29

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern men's tennis team travels to Clemson, South Carolina, Sunday for a pair of matches against The Citadel and the hosting Tigers at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
 
The Eagles face the Bulldogs at 9:00 a.m. before battling Clemson at 1:00 p.m.
 
Last time out:
The Eagles (1-3) defeated Florida Gulf Coast this past Friday 4-3 in Fort Meyers, Florida, after Alexandros Roumpis' 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 match-clinching singles win over Marcelo Feliksas. The following Sunday, the team suffered a 0-5 loss at Miami but saw Murphy McCullough and Santiago Suarez pull out a 6-3 doubles upset of No. 9 nationally ranked Fanco Aubone and Benjamin Hannestad
 
The Citadel Series history:
The Eagles lead the series over the Bulldogs 27-6 and have won the last seven straight. The teams have played 33 matches with the first coming in the Eagles' inaugural season in 1974. That match gave Georgia Southern its second program win in a 9-0 victory. The Eagles have won every contest since 2010.  
 
Clemson Series history:
The Tigers lead the series 1-0 having won the only meeting 4-3 in 2016.
 
About The Citadel:
The Bulldogs are 0-3 in 2020 after opening the season against two ranked opponents over three matches. The Citadel lost 0-7 against No. 16 South Carolina twice before suffering the same fate at No. 18 Tennessee by the same score. The Bulldogs will also face Clemson on Sunday evening.   
 
About Clemson:
The Tigers are 2-0 in 2020 after a 5-2 win versus Furman and a 4-1 win over Wofford at home this past weekend. Clemson is set for a Friday match at home with Auburn ahead of Sunday's action.     
 
What Eagles head coach Sander Koning had to say:
"We've been progressing well throughout these matches with tough opponents. The guys have been going through the process really well. This weekend, I'm looking for them to take the next step in bettering our game. I think our big doubles win last week is a good boost for us going into these matches."
 
Up Next:
Following the trip, the team returns home to host Mercer Jan. 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Wallis Tennis Center.
