JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The Georgia Southern women's tennis team opened the 2020 season on a high note after defeating Florida A&M Saturday morning 5-2 on the campus of the University of North Florida.
The GS Eagles (1-0) dropped the doubles point early but rebounded to take five of six singles points to secure the win. Most singles wins were dominant with GS giving up one or fewer points in six total sets.
Two Eagle freshmen earned their first collegiate win with
Nadja Meier downing Haleigh Porter 6-0, 6-0 and
Paula Hijos besting Adrienne Clayton 6-1, 6-2.
Paula Boixader, Charlotte Van Diemen and
Mila Hartig also picked up singles wins on the day. Hartig and Van Diemen notched the lone doubles victory.
The win makes it 10 straight over FGCU (0-1) and improves the series record to 12-4 in favor of the Eagles.
What head coach Sean McCaffrey said:
"I was really impressed with how the team bounced back after dropping the doubles point. Developing our doubles game and finding the right combinations will be an ongoing process. We are definitely improving."
"Jumping out to early leads in singles really set the tone for the team and we really did a great job in that area. We have a lot to work on over the coming weeks, but there is no doubt the ladies are eager and working towards our goals."
