Volleyball Falls 3-2 at North Florida

The Eagles play in the Tennessee Classic this weekend.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Taryn Griffey posted 19 kills and four blocks to lead North Florida to a 3-2 (25-16, 19-25, 25-18, 27-29, 15-9) volleyball win over Georgia Southern Tuesday night in UNF Arena.

Eagles of the Match
Carly Turner led Georgia Southern (4-4) with 11 kills and added three blocks, and Skylar Ball tallied 10 kills and three blocks in her first match of the season. Madison Brown posted 41 assists and 15 digs, and Landon Jones recorded 16 digs.

Key moments
The Ospreys (4-6) scored eight of the first 10 points in the fifth set, but the Eagles answered by scoring four of the next five on two kills by Mya Wilson and one from Ball, trimming the margin to 9-6. North Florida won the next two points, the second of which came on an Osprey block by Emma Dixon and Gabby O'Connell after a long rally. The Eagles trimmed the margin to four points twice, but that was as close as they would get.

Down 2-1 in the match, the Eagles trailed 17-13 in the fourth but used an 8-1 run behind the serve of Brown and a couple of Baylor Bumford blocks to open a 21-18 cushion. North Florida answered by scoring three of the next four points, but GS reached set point at 24-23 following a block by Ball and Brown. North Florida scored the next two points, and the Eagles answered the bell by fighting off three match points, eventually tying the score on a block by Turner. Turner added a kill on the next play for a 28-27 GS lead, and Wilson ended the set with a kill to tie the match 2-2.

Quotables from head coach Chad Willis
"Tough outcome tonight. I am not a big fan of the phrase 'moral victories,' but there were a lot of things we'll take away from this match that will help us moving forward. I told the team in the locker room we were extremely proud of the fight, even in a match where we really struggled at times, to continue to pull ourselves up and keep after it shows the kind of mindset we've established and how we're maturing as a team. It's tough business going on the road and earning wins, but we've got 12 more matches away from Hanner this season that will benefit from the fight and effort we showed tonight."

Next up
The Eagles compete in their final in-season tournament of the year when they travel to the Tennessee Classic for three matches this weekend. GS takes on North Dakota State, host Tennessee and ETSU.
