STATESBORO – Georgia Southern men's golf coach Carter Collins announced today that Ben Carr has earned the program's Dr. Richard Rogers Award for excellence in the classroom and on the course for the spring semester.
Named in honor of Dr. Richard Rogers, one of the golf program's biggest supporters, Georgia Southern's former Faculty Athletics Representative and chair of the Psychology Department, the award is given each semester to the Eagle who best exemplifies the term student-athlete.
Carr was named second-team All-Sun Belt last spring after ranking second on the team and 15th in the conference with a 72.31 scoring average, the second best for a freshman in school history. He notched three top-20 finishes and two top-10s - placing fourth at the Schenkel Invitational and tying for seventh at the Sun Belt Championship. Carr posted four top-10 and six top-20 finishes for the year.
Rogers started at Georgia Southern as an assistant professor in psychology in 1970, and was elevated to chair of the psychology department in 1992. He served as chair for 13 years before retiring as chair in 2005.
Carr and the Eagle men's golf team open the 2019-20 season at the Demon Deacon Invitational Sept. 23-24 at Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C.
