GS returns four starters from last year’s team.
STATESBORO – Georgia Southern volleyball coach Chad Willis announced today that Baylor Bumford (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange/UNCW), Haley Fuller (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield/UAB) and Mya Wilson (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) have joined the program.
"Since getting to campus in February, one of our priorities as a staff was to hit the recruiting trail hard," said Willis. "Baylor, Haley and Mya are a product of that diligence; each will add immediate talent and depth to our roster, and we couldn't be more excited to have them joining us this fall. Our priority in recruiting is to identify quality individuals who align with our vision and mission of academic integrity, athletic excellence, leadership development and serving others first. We aren't just adding talented players with this class but great ambassadors for Eagle volleyball and Georgia Southern University."
Baylor Bumford, M/RS/Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange/UNCW/Ocala Power
Transfer from UNCW and will be a sophomore in eligibility • Played in six matches as a freshman for the Seahawks • Recorded two kills and a block while hitting .667 in her collegiate debut vs. Norfolk State • Lettered four seasons for coach Ross Usie at West Orange High School • Ranked 28th nationally in the 2017 senior class • Named first-team all-area as a senior and ranked third in the state in assists • Recorded 776 assists, 139 digs, 44 blocks, 29 aces and 72 kills in her senior season.
Willis on Bumford: "Taylor (assistant coach Taylor Sherwin) and I are very familiar with Baylor as we had an established relationship with her from her initial recruiting process. Some of the things that impress me the most with Baylor are her competitive drive and versatility as an attacker. She is passionate about the game, brings a high level of training and experience to our attacking group, and we look forward to her contributions as we continue to pursue excellence each and every day."
Haley Fuller, OPP/OH/Littleton, Colo./Chatfield/UAB/303 Volleyball Academy
Transfer from UAB and will be a sophomore in eligibility • Played in seven matches last season as a redshirt freshman for the Blazers • Collected 11 kills, eight digs and five blocks • Recorded four kills and a pair of blocks vs. North Texas and tallied three kills and hit .222 at Michigan State • Lettered three seasons for Stephanie Schick at Chatfield High School • Named second-team all-conference her junior year and was named first-team all-conference and first-team all-state in her senior season • Tallied 226 kills, 117 digs and 22 blocks while hitting .241 as a senior.
Willis on Fuller: "Haley was our very first visit and offer as a new staff and really helped set the tone for the momentum we've established in recruiting this spring. As a six-rotation pin with flexibility on the left and right, Haley will add immediate depth to our team but more importantly, brings a positive and contagious energy to our culture. As soon as she stepped on campus, it was evident Haley was going to fit right in, and we're thrilled to have her joining us."
Mya Wilson, OPP/Orlando, Fla./Olympia/Top Select Volleyball Academy
Lettered four seasons for coach Julianne Calcote at Olympia High School • Two-time team captain earned second-team all-county honors in 2015 and 2016 and all-county honorable mention as a senior in 2018 after posting 306 kills, 191 digs and 44 aces • Helped lead Top Select club team to the 2018 Junior Olympic National Championship game.
Willis on Wilson: "The shift in early recruiting means it's rare to find quality talent and character so late in a cycle, but that's exactly what we got with Mya. A ton of credit goes to Taylor, as she was really the driving force with her relationships to Top Select and the Orlando area. Mya has spent time training and competing on one of the premier club teams in the county; her versatility as an attacker, confidence and positive energy on the court and bubbly personality make her a welcome addition to our family."
The trio joins Meredith Eckard (Duluth, Ga./Duluth), Caitlyn Meeks (Lemont, Ill./Montini Catholic) and Abby Strong (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University) as newcomers to the Eagle volleyball program. Georgia Southern is set to return 13 letterwinners and four starters to the 2019 team.
