Coastal Carolina Completes 76-73 Comeback Win Over GS Women's Basketball

Chanticleers erase 10-point second-half deficit to knock off the Eagles

STATESBORO - DJ Williams scored 15 of her 25 points in the final four minutes and Caitlin Roche hit a tie-breaking three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to lift visiting Coastal Carolina to a 76-73 Sun Belt Conference victory over host Georgia Southern on Thursday evening at Hanner Fieldhouse.

The win keeps the Chanticleers (14-10, 6-7 SBC) hot in Sun Belt play, winners of six of their last eight. Georgia Southern (7-18, 2-12 SBC) dropped its fourth straight league contest with the setback.

The Eagles led by 10 points midway through the third quarter, and had a 7-point lead, 63-56, with 4:18 left to go in the game. Coastal Carolina's DJ Williams hit a three-point play with 4:07 left and proceeded to score 15 of the next 18 points by the Chanticleers, her last points coming on another three-point play with 23 seconds left that put them up by one, 73-72.

On the next possession, the Eagles' Alexis Brown was fouled with 14 seconds left, and she made one of two free throws to tie the game at 73-all. With 2.6 seconds left, Williams found Roche on the left wing, where she canned the go-ahead three. Brown had an off-balance three at the buzzer to try and tie it, but it fell short.

Each team had three players in double figures as Georgia Southern was led by Brown's 20 points. Nakol Franks added 17 points and Hailey Dias-Allen collected her second double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Williams' 25 points led the Chanticleers, while Roche finished with 15 points and Naheria Hamliton chipped in 10 points.

Eagle of the Game
Dias-Allen's second double-double of the season came thanks to seven of her 10 rebounds on the offensive end. She hit 4-of-8 from the floor, including knocking down her only three-point attempt, and also added a pair of steals and a blocked shot.

Key Moment
Leading by just four points, 44-40, midway through the third quarter, Jordan Strange and Nakol Franks hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the Eagles' largest lead of the game to 10 points, 50-40, with 3:40 remaining.

Stat of the Game
Georgia Southern led for 37 minutes and 53 seconds of the contest, while the game was tied for two minutes and 23 seconds. Coastal Carolina led for just 37 seconds - 25 seconds in the second quarter and 12 seconds in the fourth quarter.

Quotables
Head coach Kip Drown on the game and the sequence at the end

"Our kids played hard, I thought we battled all night. We couldn't get 32 [DJ Williams] a couple times late. It was a real tough decision on how to guard her at the end. She was taking us off the bounce, and if we go zone, we were worried about 23 [Caitlin Roche] on the kick. We weren't zone on the last shot, but we brought a lot of help on her. They kicked it, found her. 23 is a great shooter, so it's pick your poison."

Next Up
The Eagles host Appalachian State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in their final regular season home game of the 2018-19 season.
