NEW ORLEANS - Tulane used a strong fourth quarter to close out a 56-40 women's basketball victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Monday evening at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans.
Tulane improved to 5-8 on the season, while Georgia Southern fell to 3-9. The Green Wave picked up their first win in the brief series between the two schools, which the Eagles still lead, 2-1.
A tight defensive struggle throughout most of the contest saw the Green Wave take a 12-point lead at the break, 29-17, but the Eagles cut that lead to just seven heading into the fourth quarter. Tulane outpointed GS 17-8 in the fourth, however, to come away with the victory.
Eagle of the Game
Junior Tatum Barber was the lone Eagle to reach double figures on the day, scoring 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
Key Moment
After the Eagles cut the Tulane lead to seven at the end of the third quarter, neither team could find a point in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter. Tulane got a layup by Krystal Freeman at the 7:11 mark of the fourth and that sparked a 11-3 run over the next three and a half minutes, punctuated by a Kaila Anderson three-pointer that clinched the victory for the Green Wave.
Stat of the Game
The Eagles shot just 25.9 percent from the floor, the lowest for Georgia Southern since shooting 20.4 percent in a 81-38 loss at Georgia on Dec. 21, 2018.
Quotables
Anita Howard with her general comments on the contest against the Green Wave
"We started off really slow, and we had three quarters where we didn't score 10 points. When you're not able to score, you got to be able to stop people. We allowed them to do what they do best. We allowed their shooters to shoot and we allowed their drivers to attack. I think their length did give us some problems. But when you're on the road and not shooting well, you can't give a solid program extra opportunities [26 turnovers]. That's the game in itself as we were really sloppy today."
