NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference named Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk its Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2018-19 season Monday evening at the league's annual fall meetings.
A first-team PING and Golfweek All-America selection and a member of the All-Nicklaus Team, Fisk finished second at the NCAA Championships at 5-under-par after shooting 68-68-71 in the last three rounds. It was the 13th top-5 finish in his stellar Georgia Southern career and his 25th career top-10.
"I want to thank everyone affiliated with the Sun Belt Conference for extending this award to me," said Fisk. "I'd also like to thank everybody with Georgia Southern and my coach and my teammates for helping make this award possible for me. None of this would have happened without them, and I'm truly grateful to them."
Fisk, who was one of three finalists for the Haskins Award - the Heisman Trophy of College Golf - won six tournaments last season, including his second Sun Belt Championship, becoming the second player in league history to win the conference championship twice. The senior finished in the top-10 nine times and placed in the top-25 in all 12 events he played in. He tied for sixth at the NCAA Stanford Regional to lead the Eagles to their first appearance in the NCAA Championship Finals since 2010, and he posted the sixth-lowest season scoring average (69.03) in NCAA Division I history.
Fisk passed Eagle great Jodie Mudd (1978-82) for the school record in career victories with nine, and 27 of his 36 rounds played on the year were par or better. He shot a course and tournament record 61 in the second round of the Sun Belt Championship, one shy of his own school record, and was named Sun Belt Golfer of the Week three times. The two-time Sun Belt Golfer of the Year and three-time first-team all-conference selection was also semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award.
"I am very proud of Steven for earning this award," said Georgia Southern Coach Carter Collins. "He has been a great representative of Georgia Southern University and the Sun Belt Conference during his four years as a student-athlete, and he will continue to represent both during his professional career."
Fisk's stellar season continued into the summer. His top-10 world amateur ranking earned him a spot into the 119th playing of the U.S. Am in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and he advanced to the round of 32. Following the tournament, Fisk was one of 10 amateurs named to the United States 2019 Walker Cup team. He helped the USA defeat Great Britain & Ireland 15 1/2 - 10 1/2 to retain the Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool, marking the first time the visiting team won the cup since 2007.
