Eagles Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Troy

Troy defeats the Eagles 4-2 in the second round of the tournament

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women's tennis team had its season come to a close Friday morning, falling to top-seeded Troy 4-2. The Eagles finished the season with a 14-7 record and defeated rivals Georgia State and Appalachian State in the same weekend.

The Eagles had a slow start to the morning dropping the doubles point and heading into singles behind 1-0. In singles play the Eagles dropped the first set on five of the six courts. Those four of those five Eagles battled back to win the second set and send five of the six courts into third set tiebreakers. Troy picked up their second point of the morning with a straight set victory on court three.

The Blue and White battled back led by a talented and productive underclassman group. Paula Boixader helped the Eagles cut the lead to 3-1. Boixader was able to rebound from the first-set loss and win her second set 6-4. In the third set, Boixader never let up, getting ahead 4-1 in the set before finishing off her opponent 6-2.

Arianne de Winter surrendered a point to the Trojans just before Boixader won her match. De Winter split the first two sets with her opponent and was on a mission in the third set. In the third set, De Winter was up 4-3 and continued to force game points left and right. Freshman Mila Hartig continued her dominance on court six after dropping the first set 6-1. Hartig put the pressure on her opponent winning the second set 6-2 and controlled the third set winning 6-4 to help cut the lead to 3-2.

Emilia Bujan was dominant on court two again for the Eagles. Bujan won her first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 6-4. In the third set, Bujan was battling back and forth and continued to push match point from her opponent. Bujan would ultimately fall to her opponent clinching the match for the Trojans.

Charlotte van Diemen was on the verge of putting the match even at three-all, when the Trojans clinched the match. Van Diemen dropped her first set 6-3, before winning the second set 7-5. When play was suspended Charlotte was up 4-3 in the set and was leading the game 30-love.

The 2018 Eagles produced one of the most productive season in the history of the program, finishing the year with a 14-7 record. The Eagles also collected the first win over Georgia State in 20 years and won back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Tournament matches for the first time in program history. The Blue and White will return seven of the eight girls that played this season and will welcome three newcomers to the roster for the 2019 season.
