STATESBORO – Chloe Wanink made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 30 points to lead Wofford to an 81-65 women's basketball win over Georgia Southern Tuesday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.
It was the 2018-19 season opener for both teams.
Eagles of the Game
Alexis Brown scored 14 points, and
Hailey Dias-Allen collected 14 points and four rebounds.
Key moment
Georgia Southern (0-1) trimmed an early 16-point deficit down to two points with a 10-0 run to open the second period, but Wanink scored the last five points of the frame for Wofford, knocking down a 3-pointer and then scoring on a pull-up jumper as the buzzer sounded. Jackie Carman hit two treys as Wofford (1-0) scored the first three buckets of the third quarter to push the margin back to 16. The lead grew to as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter.
Stat of the Game
The Eagles missed their first seven shots of the game, while Wofford made its first four, all 3-pointers. Three of the triples were by Wanink as the Terriers started the game on a 12-0 run and led 22-6 with 1:05 left in the first period. Wofford made 10-of-19 from long distance in the contest.
Quotables
On turnovers
"We were happy with the first half, but the problem is, we're down and trying to get back in the game and in the first nine possessions of the third quarter, we turn it over four times. So we had a third of our turnovers right there and didn't give ourselves a chance to make that run in the second half like we made in the second quarter."
On the run in the second quarter
"
Jordan Strange kind of sparked us. She did a great job on No. 1, who is a heck of a player and had a super night. Jordan made it more difficult for her, and we just played a lot harder defensively."
Overall
"We have to learn to fight through those times when you aren't shooting very well. We shot 5-for-20 from 3 tonight so we weren't making shots, but you have to keep playing through that and I didn't feel like we did that in some spurts."
Next up
The Eagles travel to Virginia Tech Saturday before playing host to long-time rival Mercer Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse.
