South Alabama Downs Volleyball 3-0

The Eagles travel to Coastal Carolina and App next weekend.

MOBILE, Ala. – Kelley Hartman recorded 10 kills, and South Alabama hit .323 as a team to post a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-14) Sun Belt volleyball victory over Georgia Southern Saturday in Jag Gym.

Megan Chevalier tallied seven kills, four digs and two blocks for the Eagles (5-9, 2-2), and Cathrine Murray notched six kills, six digs and two blocks.

Hartman hit .500 for South Alabama (9-5, 4-0), while Iva Durdanovic and Morgan Stalcup each registered nine kills. Durdanovic added eight digs and two blocks and Stalcup chipped in four blocks.

The story
After winning the first set 25-20, South Alabama held the Eagles to .143 hitting in the second set and .077 in the third.

The Jags led 13-6 early in the first, but Chevalier and Skylar Ball each tallied a block and a kill in a 5-0 run that trimmed the margin to two points. The Jags answered with four straight and led by at least four points the rest of the way.

South Alabama used a 6-1 run to turn a four-point lead into a 21-12 cushion in the second. The Jags scored eight straight points to break an 11-11 tie in the third.

Quotable from head coach Dustin Wood
"Our effort was there but lack of execution on our passing and setting did us in tonight. We played well in spurts in the first set, but inconsistent play from our serve receive and setting gave way too many opportunities for south Alabama. They did a good job of keeping pressure on us, and we didn't reverse that pressure in the second and third."

"I felt the team pressed too hard tonight and forgot about the little details in our structure and fundamentals when trying to execute on a ball. The game comes down to fundamentals, which will be better when we get back into the gym."

"We had a nice win streak going, and we will all work hard to get another one going next match. We are on the road again next week so we know how tough it is to win on the road but know this group will be ready."
