KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.Iben Hvass shot a 2-over 74, and Ariana Macioce carded a 75 to lead the Georgia Southern women's golf team into a tie for 17th after the first round of the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic Sunday.

Tabbed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the 2016 edition of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic features 41 teams in the field and is being played on two courses for the three-day, 54-hole tournament – Osprey Point and Oak Point. After 36 holes of play, the top-20 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point during the final round.

Georgia Southern (+18), is tied with Delaware, six strokes back of Mercer (+12) and Iowa, which are tied for ninth. Southern Miss (+21) is 20th, just three strokes behind the Eagles. Chattanooga (-5) leads the field. Georgia Southern and Jacksonville State (+16, T15) are the only two teams in the top-20 that played Oak Point today. The other 18 all played Osprey Point, which the Eagles play tomorrow.

Hvass is tied for 25th in the field of 216 golfers, and Macioce is tied for 39th. Taylor Thompson shot a 78, Ansley Bowman posted a 79 and Yeji Shin carded an 80.

The story
Hvass had two birdies and two bogeys on her front nine to make the turn at even par. The junior was even through 13 holes before a couple of bogeys on holes 14 and 17 dropped her to 2-over. Macioce is tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring after birdieing four of the five par-5 holes at Oak Point and carding par on the other. Thompson rolled in a pair of birdies and finished her round with three pars in her final four holes. Bowman's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 422-yard 4th hole.

Quotable from head coach Emily Kuhfeld
"Next to the ocean, we have some wind and firm conditions to contend with, and I feel like the team did a good job with their course management today. Iben and Ari turned in solid rounds for us, and Taylor had a strong showing for her first tournament round of the spring. We are looking forward to round two tomorrow!"

Next up
The Eagles play on Osprey Point tomorrow and will be paired with Boston College and Samford. The first group tees off at 10:43 a.m.
