CHARLOTTE, N.C.- After opening weekend, the Georgia Southern men's tennis team extended their spring record to 2-0 after beating Gardner-Webb on Sunday 6-1 following the match against Davidson on Saturday.
Â
"The score doesn't show how competitive the match really was," head coach
Sander Koning said. "Gardner-Webb is a tough team and are very good when they get down. They kept playing their best tennis and made us work for every point."
Â
The Eagles started off to a quick start, clinching the double despite Gardner-Webb picking up the first match. The No.2 tag-team, sophomore
Eddie Landin and junior
Nico de Groof, won the first for Georgia Southern and left it to senior
Rise Lanne and junior
Christian Kerrigan, the No.1 duo, to clinch the doubles point to put the Blue and White up one moving into singles.
"All singles matches were battles," Koning said. "The conditions were tough, with the cold and wind, but our guys embraced it, and we were able to win ugly."
Â
Landin was able to come up with a win early in the No.3 spot, which Koning said continued the team momentum from winning the doubles point. Sophomore JC Alcala (No.2) and Lanne (No.1) were able to follow suit in singles, both winning 6-3, 7-6 and 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 respectively to capture the dual match.
Â
De Groof went down at the No.4 position, but not without a fight, losing 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 against Benjamin Kaszas.
Â
"Nico played very well, but his opponent came up with some good shots at the end," Koning noted.
Â
Casablancas (No.5) and Johnson (No.6) were able to scrap out wins, both winning in three close sets.
Â
"Dani and Andre weren't playing their best tennis and had some up and downs during the match," Koning said. "I am happy they were able to pull through. Those kind of matches are always good for later on in the season-- you know you cannot play your best but figure out a way to win anyway."
Â
"Overall I am pleased with the effort of the guys and their competitiveness. We have some work ahead of us and fortunately we have two weeks to do that before we play again."
