LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honored the Georgia Southern volleyball program with a Team Academic Award for the 2014 season. It is the second consecutive season the Eagles have earned the accolade.
The Eagle volleyball program is one of 146 in Division I to receive the accolade. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
"I am so proud of this group for receiving this award once again," said Georgia Southern coach Dustin Wood. "It is a goal of ours each year to receive this award. It is a testament to how hard these student-athletes work in the classroom and on the court. Our program represents Georgia Southern University with pride, and we will continue to strive to exceed expectations every day."
Seven Eagles were named to the Sun Belt Commissioner's List for maintaining a GPA of 3.50 or higher, and another four were named to the league's honor roll for posting a GPA of 3.0 to 3.49.
Georgia Southern returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from the 2014 team. Starters Katie Bange, Alex Beecher and Crysten Curry all missed significant time in the fall with injuries and redshirted the season. The season opens Aug. 28 against Binghamton in the FAU Invitational.
