AIKEN, S.C. – Scott Wolfes shot a 67-65=132 (-8) in the first two rounds of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational at Palmetto Golf Club Monday and leads the tournament heading into tomorrow's final round.
The senior has a one-stroke lead over Aaron Cockerill of Idaho and a two-stroke advantage over four players who are tied for third.
Georgia Southern (+4) is tied for eighth with Liberty, four strokes behind Furman (E) and five back of Idaho (-1) and GRU Augusta, which are tied for fifth. South Carolina (-14) leads the field, followed by Clemson (-13), Virginia (-8) and Kennesaw State (-2). The tournament features five teams in the top-50 in the country and 17 individuals in the top-100.
Wolfes, who started on hole 8 in both rounds, logged 11 birdies on the day, which tied for the second most of any player in the field. He birdied his first hole and was 1-under has he made the turn to the front nine in the first round. He posted birdies on holes 1, 4 and 5 to move to 4-under and bogeyed hole 6 to finish with a 67.
He made six birdies and just one bogey, which came on the last hole of the day, in his second round. He started with another birdie on hole 8 and added two more on holes 10 and 11. Birdies at holes 14, 15 and 3 pushed him to 6-under before settling for the 65.
"Great playing by Scott today," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "Palmetto Golf Club can be tough and for him to play at 8-under is an impressive day and held our team in the mix."
Kim Koivu shot 74-70=144 (+4), and Jake Storey carded a 74-71=145 (+5). Archer Price posted a 70-76=146 (+6), and Charlie Martin notched a 75-73=148 (+8).
"As a team, we kept the ball in play very well but didn't take advantage of the birdie opportunities when they presented themselves," said Collins. "Tomorrow, we need to clean up a few things, and if we do, we'll have a chance to climb up the board."
After a 74 in the first round, Koivu birdied his first hole of the second round and was 1-over through 14 holes. The senior finished with a flurry, birdieing two of his final three holes of the day for a second-round, even-par 70.
Storey also shot a 74 in the first round and logged nine straight pars in the second round before a birdie on hole 3 moved him to even. He bogeyed his last hole of the day for a 71.
Price, who started the day on hole 9, was on fire at the beginning of his first round with birdies on his first two holes, and added three more birdies to move to 5-under through 11 holes. The freshman stumbled on four of the next five holes before finishing with two pars to post a 70. He managed two birdies in the second round, which moved him to 1-over after 10 holes, but struggled coming in.
After posting a 75 in the first round, Martin carded birdies on holes 13, 14 and 1 to move to 1-over through 10 holes. Bogeys on the next two holes dropped the senior to 3-over before he recovered for five straight pars en route to the 73.
Another shotgun start to avoid the impending inclement weather is scheduled for round three, and the Eagles will tee off holes 7, 8 and 9 at 9:30 a.m. Georgia Southern is paired with Furman and Liberty.
Georgia Southern's home tournament, the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club, is less than a month away. The 15-team event runs March 20-22.
