Elon, Nc. – The Eagles (4-6) defeated the Elon University Phoenix Saturday by the score 5-2. After earning the doubles point, Georgia Southern took 4 of 6 singles matches to preserve the victory.
"It was a great battle between two competitive teams," said Head Coach Alexander Koning. "Today, we were just a little bit more aggressive at critical moments in the match and it paid off. Now, we turn our sights to a tough UNC-G team."
The match began in favor of the Phoenix as the No. 1 doubles tandem of Stefan Fortmann and Brian Kowalski defeated
Kyle Hoffman and
Jose Landin 8-3. Needing to win the 2 remaining doubles matches to clinch the doubles point, the Eagles evened the score when
Christian Kerrigan and
Joan Carles Alcala setback Chris Humphreys and Neal Port 8-7 (7-4).
The doubles point was clinched by the Eagles, when the No. 2 duo of
Albert Codina Sala and Ristomatte Lanne took down Juan Madrid and Robert Lindgren 8-6.
Leading 1-0 going in to singles, it was
Nico de Groof at the No. 6 position who got the first Eagles single point as he claimed victory over Hjmpreys 6-2, 6-1.
Not going down without a fight, Elon rallied to make it 2-1 in favor of the Eagles when Lindgren defeated Landin at the No. 3 position 6-2, 6-4. Moments later, Hoffman got the job done at No. 4 when he dispatched Josh Luck 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The match winner for the Eagles was Alcala in the No. 5 position who defeated Madrid 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
Playing the match to completion, Lanne made it 5-1 for the Eagles when he setback Fortmann in the No. 1 position 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Codina Sala was last on the court and fell to Kaufman 5-7, 6-3, 2-6 for a final match score of 5-2 in favor of the Eagles.
The Eagles will remain on the road and return to action Sunday when they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to challenge the University of North Carolina Greensboro Spartans beginning at 12 p.m.
