STATESBORO, Ga. – Twelve Georgia Southern football players went through various drills, tests and measurements at the Eagles' Pro Day at Paulson Stadium Monday.
It was the first time the activities in a Georgia Southern Pro Day were centrally located with Paulson Stadium, the Rotary Corp. Field of Dreams and the Ted Smith Family Football Center housing the days' events. Scouts from six NFL teams and a CFL squad were on hand for Pro Day.
"Just in watching, I thought they did a really nice job," said Georgia Southern coach Willie Fritz. "I think we have some guys who have a legit chance of making it and are excited about their opportunities."
The day began at 10:30 a.m. on the rain-soaked turf of Glenn Bryant Field as each player ran the 40, and then the players and scouts made use of the synthetic turf on the Field of Dreams for more drills. Height and weight measurements as well as vertical jump, broad jump and bench press results were completed in the Ted Smith Family Football Center weight room. Players went back out to the stadium for a few more drills in a light drizzle.
"You have to understand that when you're playing football, it's an all-weather game," said linebacker Edwin Jackson. "You can play in the snow, you can play in the rain, and when they see how you can use your feet in muddy conditions, it shows them you can play football. Sometimes you have to get down and gritty, especially as a linebacker."
Jackson has spent the last eight weeks training at EFT Sports Performance in Chicago, where he received plenty of personal training instruction.
"When I got there, there was snow up to your knees," said Jackson. "It kind of felt like Rocky, going into the mountains and training – I was really able to focus."
Offensive lineman Garrett Frye, weighing in at 295 pounds now, has talked to a few teams and gotten the sense he could be a late-round pick. If his name is not called, he likes his chances catching on with a team as a free agent.
"I wasn't really expecting anything greater," said Frye. "I'm just proud to be getting a shot. I just want a shot in a training camp, and that's all I need. All you need is one."
Eagle great and current Associate Athletic Director Tracy Ham remembered his combine coming out of Georgia Southern.
"I was at the combine, and I ran bad, lifted bad and probably looked bad," Ham said with a grin. "I didn't really know or understand that there is a process to it. Now, our players know the process and can prepare. It's great that these guys have a chance to live the dream whether they go on or don't go on."
