HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes fired a 69 in the first round of the Wexford Intercollegiate at Wexford Plantation Golf Course Monday and is tied for the lead in the individual standings.
The Eagles (+8) are tied for third on the team leaderboard with Western Carolina and Radford. Wofford (+2) leads the tournament by a stroke over Charleston Southern (+3). Wolfes is tied with four other individuals.
The tournament was scheduled for 36 holes today and 18 tomorrow but darkness caused a suspension of play. Most teams managed to get in 14-15 holes of the second round. Play is tentatively slated to resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the conclusion of the second round followed by the final 18.
"We almost put together a solid round but lost a couple coming in during the morning round," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "Scott's 69 is a very good score on this course, and he held us in there as a team."
Kim Koivu carded a 73 and is tied for 11th. Archer Price shot a 76, and Charlie Martin posted a 78. Jake Storey rounded out the group with an 86.
Wolfes went off hole 10 and after a bogey on hole 12, posted consecutive birdies on holes 13 and 14. He played the next four at even par and then logged birdies on holes 1, 4 and 5 to move to 4-under. He sandwiched a birdie on hole 7 between a pair of bogeys to post a 69.
Koivu went off hole 11 and logged a birdie, followed by six straight pars. He played his next five holes at 3-over but birdied holes 5 an 9 to get back to even before a bogey on hole 10 gave him the 73.
Price, who went off hole 11, started his day with five straight pars and then birdied hole 16 to make the turn 1-under. After a double bogey on hole 3, the freshman had some trouble coming home to finish with the 76. Martin, who went off hole 10, struggled out of the gates and never really got going in the first round on his way to a 78.
"We have played 14-15 holes in the second round and are currently finishing strong but need to continue that momentum in the morning to finish it off," said Collins.
